The graveside service for Hal Crenshaw Wynne, Jr. will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 24 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville. Rev. Kathy Morris from First United Methodist Church of Bartlesville will officiate. Arrangements are by Stumpff Funeral Home. A quiet and unassuming individualist, Hal worked his way through college during depression era Oklahoma, established and nurtured a family, and served the same employer for his entire working career. Born November 1, 1911 in Checotah, Oklahoma, to Hal Crenshaw Wynne, Sr. and Bertha Abbie Wentzell. His parents moved several times within Oklahoma to insure Hal and his sister's education. Hal graduated as the Senior Class President of Miami High School in 1929. Hal's mother encouraged him to pursue his aptitude for math and science and he enrolled in the engineering school at the University of Oklahoma - a perfect match for his mechanical ability. Hal participated in ROTC and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1933. He spent college summers at Ft. Logan in Denver where his interest in geology thrived in the Colorado Rockies. Hal graduated from OU in 1937 with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering. His military commission was preempted by a determination that he was an "essential worker" and needed to help expand domestic oil production during World War II. Hal was hired by Phillips Petroleum as a field geophysicist to serve on a seismic "doodlebugger" crew exploring the continent for new oil deposits to fuel wartime needs. He moved frequently from prospect to prospect until the end of the war. Geraldine Hunt, an Arkansas farm girl, caught his eye in a Guthrie cafe and they later married in New Iberia, Louisiana in 1942 - the start of a 52 year old marriage. After the war, Phillips moved Hal to field offices in Oklahoma City, Calgary, Denver and finally to Bartlesville in 1961. He retired in 1976 with nearly 40 years of company service.
Geraldine preceded Hal in death in 1994. Hal lived independently at his Bartlesville residence through age 94. Thereafter, he lived briefly at Green Country Village and St. Simeon's Episcopal Home in Tulsa prior to his death. Hal was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and the Bartlesville Amateur Radio Club ("KA5LGF"). His fascination for the natural world prompted his pleasure to hunt, fish, camp and explore. He was an avid tennis player, rockhound and woodworker. Classical and choral music were essential to his everyday. Hal died December 20, 2007 at the St. John Medical Center in Tulsa.
Surviving are his daughter Susan G. Wynne of Tulsa and his son John H. Wynne and wife Gail of Enid. Also surviving are his grandson Elliott B. Wynne and wife Kristina of Denver.
