Two Drown After Auto Accident (Mrs. Oueda Bearden Morris and Mrs. June Counts Webb ) - Two North Little Rock women were drowned and three other persons injured Saturday night when two cars, one following the other, missed the Chickalah Creek bridge and plunged into the creek. Four cars have plunged into the creek at this place in a little over a year. Dead are Mrs. Oueda Bearden Morris, 33, and her cousin, Mrs. June Counts Webb, 30. Injured were Harold S. Webb, husband of Mrs. Webb, his brother-in- law, Troy Bearden of North Little Rock; and Mrs. May Bell Whitley of Little Rock. There were taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Russellville. Webb was driving the lead car. His wife and Mrs. Morris were with him. Bearden, accompanied by Mrs. Whitley, was following. An approaching car had cleared the bridge and had left a cloud of dust, according to Webb. Webb apparently did not see the bridge until his car ran up on a side banister and toppled side wise into the water. Bearden apparently was following the taillights of Webb's car and plunged behind it into the creek. A pillar of strength and popularity, Laura Webster was known as a matriarch of Yell County. The Havana native raised prizewinning vegetables well into her 90s and loved to visit with sick people and shut-ins. She was very active and cared so much about her community, said her long time friend, Alma Torrence. "To know Laura was to love her.
Webster died Saturday in the home of her daughter, Novella Williams of Little. She was 101. Born at Harris Chapel to George Washington Surratt and Susie Elizabeth Surratt, she was the third of 14 children. She lived at Harris Chapel all her live but the last three years. She married Otis Webster in 1920. They had four children. In a 1995 ad in the Yell County Record, the Danville State Bank recognized Webster as the depositor who had held an account with the bank the longest. Laura Webster was a pillar of strength mentally, physically and spiritually to the community of Harris Chapel. We ran an ad recognizing her on her 99th birthday, too, said Jim Ray Holbrook, a spokesman for the bank. "She had been a loyal customer since we opened in 1930. The small community of Harris Chapel is east of Havana, south of Arkansas Hwy 10 in Yell County Webster's uncle, Dick Harris, formed the first church in die community, which has carried his name for more than 100 years. Over the years, she held several positions in the church, including trustee, stewardess, Sunday school teacher and missionary. She once told a friend that if I am able to feed hogs, make a garden and tend cows, I am able to go to church. There is no excuse to miss church service except illness.
Webster was known throughout the county for the vegetables she entered in the Yell County Fair each year. She was an exhibitor in the field crops division and shed win the sweepstakes each year way into her 90s, said Jim Pleder, executive director of the Arkansas State Fair. I was president of the Yell County Fair and Ms. Laura was on the fair board. She was a super-nice lady, he said. According to the bank ad, Webster was the first black person to enter produce in the Yell County Fair. She also served as a county midwife. She had as many white friends as she did black friends, Torrence said. She was well thought of in Yell County. Her granddaughter and namesake, Laura Martin, was crowned Mrs. Arkansas in 1995. "My grandmother always encouraged me to work hard at achieving my goals, Martin said she encouraged me not to give up on any goal.
She is survived by two daughters, Novella Williams and Nora Beasley both of Little Rock; two sons, George Webster of Belleville, AR and William Webster of Dardanelle, AR; a brother, Charlie Surratt of Belleville and several grandchildren. Services have tentatively been planned for Saturday, April 4, 1998 for 12 noon at the Harris Chapel Church, located between Belleville and Havana. IN MEMORY Mr. Clark Russel Weems died at his home near Union Hill February 17th, 1927. He was born February 21st, 1863, and was married November 13th, 1887, to Margaret Lucinda Ash at Dardanelle, Ark., by Rev. John C. Ship of the Methodist Church, South. Mr. Weem's wife departed this life twelve years ago, Dec. 28th, 1915. To this union eleven children were born, nine of whom survive, as follows: Omer Weems, of Lyons, Kans., Ollie Weems, of Fort Smith; Mrs. Ert Haney, of Belleville; Mrs. Clarence Jenkins, of Little Rock; Mrs. Val M. Banks, of Dardanelle; Mrs. Edd McClure, Mr. Opal Weems, and Miss Lucile and Loid Weems, who were still with their father at the time of his death. In November, 1924, Mr. Weems was married to Miss Roxie Daniels, who still survives him.
Mr. Weems professed faith in Christ twelve years ago and united with the M. E. Church, South, at Oak Grove, and continued a faithful servant of the Lord until the final summons came. He was one who always looked on the bright side and tried to cheer others through life. He had a smile and a kind word for all. During his last illness his children were all called to his bedside, and all that loved ones could do was done. But He that knoweth best has called him from our midst. His departure leaves a vacant chair that never can be filled; his loving voice to dear ones here on earth is forever stilled. But weep not, dear ones, for our loss is Heaven's gain, and yet with us doth his life work still remain. Written by HIS NIECE (WWW.YellCountyObits.org, Published in Post-Dispatch, Dardanelle, Arkansas: 3-24-1927)
