He finished school at Danville in 1925. He was active in all sports, setting a record for the mile run, which held for 5 years. He entered Ark. July 1st, 1931 he was appointed head of the Agronomy Department at Murray State College of Agriculture Tishomingo, OK.

June 1935 he was placed in charge of the "Range and Pasture Management Program, for the newly created "Soil and Conservation Service." In 1936 the "Regional" Office of Salina, KS, put him in charge of the Range and Pasture division covering Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. January 1, 1939 he was transferred to Amarillo, TX to oversee the "Regrassing of the Dust Bowl." to implement the replanting of much of the areas windswept earth. He was looked on as a "Dust Bowl Hero" in the Texas Panhandle area at the time. He oversaw the replanting of millions of acres of land in early 1940s in portions of Texas, Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma and New Mexico. He said a lot of people didnt think anything could be done about it. A quote from an article written in 1996, "Syd Watson cant do anything about the lack of rain in the Texas Panhandle area, but there was a time when his work limited the amount of air borne dust that often blackened the sky during the "Dust Bowl" Syd was an Agronomist with the Federal Government's Soil Conservation Service, when he was sent to Amarillo in January 1939 to implement the replanting of much of the dust area. In 1942 he was assigned to Hdq, A. F. in Washington DC with station in Dallas, TX.

He worked with the US Army Engineers as Lasion Officer, recommending Erosion and Dust Control on the Air Fields. He reached the rank of Colonel before leaving the Air Force in 1947 when he became "Division Agronomist for the U. S. Engineers responsible for Erosion and Flood Control on dams and levees in the Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. At the start of the Korean War he was placed in charge of the Coordinating Section for the military construction. A job he held until he retired in 1965. At that time he was presented with a sustained Superior Accomplish Award by the Army Engineers of Dallas, TX.

Syd said his favorite and most challenging job was heading up the re vegetation of the Dust Bowl area. He said several factors have helped prevent another Dust Bowl. Land that will remain unplowed improved plowing practices and government programs such as the Conservation Reserve Program. Those are the three primary things that will keep that area from ever being like it was at one time. Syd passed away, October 22, 1997 in Amarillo, TX.
