Everett Smith was born in a small town in Yell County. At the age of 17 years he moved to Hot Springs. His father was a carpenter, but he elected a different career path. He enlisted in the National Guard and became a mess sergeant.
He enjoyed cooking and in 1951 decided to look for a job as a short-order cook. A visit to a local employment agency failed to find an opening for a cook. He opted for the only job opening listed that day an opening at Caruth Funeral Home for an ambulance driver. At 20 years of age that would prove to be a launching pad for his career. He started making ambulance calls, working funeral and general housekeeping duties, along with taking special care of the black Henney-Packard hearses.
In the late 1950s he began working for Davis Funeral Home in Glenwood. He commuted for several years, but in 1963 he moved to Glenwood with his wife, Ruth, and children. For the next 20 years he was full-time director and embalmer with the firm. As the firm grew, another person was needed. Smith's son, Tony, came back to work with his father in 1983. Tony's wife, Ladonna, also went to work there and served her internship for her funeral directors license. Upon the retirement of Marlin Louise Davis in 1989, Smith purchased the funeral home which has continued to expand under his ownership. (WWW.YellCountyObits.org, Submitted by: Patron, -/-/?)
