Small Loses Battle; Wins War - David Small, 59, died last Friday, March 6, 2009 after a long Illness. He lost a medical battle for his life but certainly won his war of life for almost 32 years after overcoming impossible odds in July of 1977. That was the day he was left for dead--critically shot in the chest, stuffed in a trunk on an extremely hot day for hours before he was found and rescued at Blue Mtn. Lake. During the next three decades, Small rose to the occasion and was able to continue working for the Corps of Engineers part time as a Ranger, just as he was doing the day he was shot. And, he taught for several years in Plainview and Danville as well as other areas to have a long teaching career before he retired last year because of a medical condition. It was the privilege of the Yell County Record and its staff to have published an extensive series of articles and photographs that depicted a chronological order of events that began on June 1977 and ended nearly 20 years later on January 1997.
It was an extremely hot day in July when it began. Two escapees from Oklahoma changed the lives of three families forever in this area as they did many other families in other states. Because the men had no compassion for human life, they killed Magazine Marshal Marvin Ritchie and Blue Mtn. Lake Park Ranger Opal James. Small, along with family members of Ritchie and James were forced to suffer through three trials; two escapes and nearly 20 years of pure agony before killers Paul Ruiz and Earl Van Denton paid for the deeds of their crime.
The Record dedicated those series of stories to David Small for what he suffered, along with the James and Ritchie families and to provide our younger generations a view of history that changed the lives of so many. Although Small had learned to set aside the terrible memories from July 1977 to 1997, he was enlightened with the chronicle of news articles and photographs published as he heard from so many of his friends and others about the "Story of His Life" during the three months of the series in the fall of 2008.
