Sipes, William M.

The death angel visited our home at Joe Woodall's, near Danville, on April 5th, 1931, and took away my loving companion, Mr. Wm. M. Sipes. He was buried April 6th in Chalybeate Cemetery. He passed away after six weeks' of suffering from blood poison in his leg. Mr. Wm. M. Sipes was a loving companion and a true father in the home. He was 56 years old and had lived a true and devoted Christian life until Jesus said, "Come home." He was loyal to his fellow man in all of his dealings. Mr. Sipes bore his sufferings with much patience. He always had a pleasant word for anyone that came in. "Uncle William," as he was affectionately known, will be greatly missed in church and Sunday School. He was so faithful, and ever ready to do his part, and there was nothing he enjoyed more than going to church and Sunday School. Above everything else, he enjoyed hearing good singing, and his favorite song was, "When the Saints Come Marching In." "Uncle William" Sipes leaves to mourn his going a wife, an aged father and mother in Russellville, who failed to receive the message in time to reach here, five daughters, Mrs. Joe Woodall, of this place; Mrs. Elmer Tidwell, of Shark; Mrs. Grady Woodard, of Blue Ball; Mrs. Milo Woodall and Mrs. Della Templeton, of Russellville.

The funeral service was conducted by Rev. G. W. Denton, and beautiful songs were led by Rev. Little and other friends. The flowers offered were many and beautiful. A friend, Mrs. Charles Harris (Post-Dispatch Newspaper, Dardanelle, Arkansas, pub. Skinner, Earnest Lee "Ernie"

Airplane Crash Takes Lives of Three; A. A. McDonald, Pilot Saturday afternoon, March 6, 1948, A.A. McDonald and Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Skinner were killed in an airplane crash near the old John Day airfield on the hill above John Day. The plane was completely destroyed in the fire which followed the crash and identification of the bodies was determined only in the manner in which they were seated in the plane. McDonald, who was pilot, had been flying off and on all that day from the field below town and on this particular trip had taken off about 2:30 in the afternoon and the crash followed shortly afterward. As far as is known no witnesses of the accident were located but several people saw the plane just before the crash. No one will probably ever know what caused the ship to crash but it has been definitely established that the ship was not on fire before crashing. The accident was first reported by Al Pearson, who was flying that day and flew over the wreckage shortly after the accident. He landed at the local field and reported to Jim Lyons who in turn notified local officials but by the time the plane was reached it had been completely destroyed. McDonald had been flying for about two years and had almost 200 flying hours to his credit as he did a great deal of flying both on business and as pleasure. Mr. and Mrs.

Ernie Skinner had recently moved to the John Day valley from Arkansas and they are survived by two small children; Ernie Mack, age 2 years and Reta Mae, age 8 months, besides other relatives in the east. Mr. Skinner was born at Waveland, Arkansas and was 31 years of age at the time of his passing. Mrs. Skinner was born in Park Falls, Wisconsin and was 21 years of age at the time of her passing.

Funeral services were held (today) Friday, March 11 for Mr. and Mrs. Skinner from Driskill's chapel and interment was in the Canyon City cemetery. (WWW.YellCountyObits.org,Blue Mountain Eagle Newspaper, John Day, Oregon, Obituary was published on March 12, 1948)
