Rutledge, Amanda

Aunt Amanda Rutledge passed away Saturday. On last Saturday, September 18th, 1926, "Aunt Amanda" Rutledge died at the home of her son, Charles Rutledge, on Chickalah Mountain. "Aunt Amanda" was born in Itawamba County, Miss., July 13, 1844, thus being at the time of her death 82 years, two months and five days of age. She was married April 3, 1866, and moved to Yell County, Ark., in 1869, and for two years lived six miles south of Dardanelle. In January, 1872, the family moved to Chickalah Mountain where Mrs. Rutledge spent the remainder of her life. "Aunt Amanda" joined the Missionary Baptist Church in 1861 and lived a true and devoted Christian to the hour of her death. She was the mother of eleven children. We remember her with utmost tenderness, and do not think of her as dead, but rather that she only moved on to the Golden City in the Land Celestial. We deplore the absence of our departed friend and grieve that she is away but we remember that not only does death come to all but that "Death" is but a path that must be trod, if man would ever pass from earth to God. The sudden removal of such a life from among us leaves a vacancy and a shadow that will be deeply realized by her host of friends. And with deep sympathy for the bereaved family of one we all dearly loved, we express our hope that even so great a loss to all of us may be over ruled for good by Him, who said "I will not leave you comfortless."

"Aunt Amanda" leaves a husband and eight children: Mr. Alfred Rutledge and Mrs. Celia Hatch, of Dardanelle; Mrs. Lou Emma Beavers, of Weber Falls, Okla.; Mr. Bonapart Rutledge, of Sulphur Springs; Mrs. Ollie Horn, Mrs. Margaret Susan Anderson, Charles and Johnny Rutledge, of Chickalah Mountain. Also two sisters, Mrs. Lou Gateley and Mrs. Celia Suits, and a brother, Mr. John H. Holmes; all of Mena; and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her loss.

Rev. John S. Sugg conducted the funeral service, and in the presence of a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends the mortal remains of "Aunt Amanda" were lovingly consigned to their last long resting place. A loving friend, Lottie Jones (WWW.YellCountyObits.org, Submitted by Mary Fowler Leek, Newspaper: Post-Dispatch Newspaper, Dardanelle, Yell County, Arkansas; 9-23-1926)
