Kathryn Miller Ray, mother, grandmother, departed this world November 29. (2010) Growing up in Ard, Yell County, daughter of a school teacher, Marshall, who hadn't received a paycheck till the WPA gave him work, the hardscrabble farm family never knew a day without love. Kathryn worked the fields of their farm from her earliest days and traveled to Dardanelle by wagon. She roamed those fields with Miss Porter who taught her Latin names for all the plants and hauled water from the spring for laundry using lye soap made from hogs they butchered at Thanksgiving, a woman of true grit, she never knew a day without love. Moving to Little Rock after graduation, working at the ordinance plant in Jacksonville, Kathryn met her husband, Walter, an Army private, mate for 61 years and she never knew a day without love. Raising her children Marshall, Billy and Julie in Indianapolis, grandpa brought her home in 1972. Kathryn spent the remainder of her 85 years in Arkansas, and she never knew a day without love. Grandma goes full circle today with a ceremony in Ard Church of Christ at 10 a.m. being laid to rest in the schoolyard of her daddy's school, spending eternity with grandpa, in the valley beneath the watchful eye of Nebo, where she's never known a day without love.
