Johnston, Oswald

Private Oswald Johnston, of Battery "E", 142nd Field Artillery, 39th Division, died at Camp Beauregard at 9 o'clock Monday morning from a complication of measles and pneumonia.

The remains were brought to this city today, accompanied by Private Vernon Johnston, cousin of the deceased, and a member of Battery "E", and the funeral service, conducted by Rev. Eli Myers, was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Johnston at 2:00 this afternoon. The public schools were closed during the funeral hour that the friends and former schoolmates of deceased might attend, the pall bearers being classmates of Oswald. The casket, draped in the National Colors, was covered with a wealth of floral tributes of love from the school children. The death of this splendid boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe S. Johnston, has cast a feeling of sadness over the entire community and brought home to each of us the grim tragedy of war. When war was declared with Germany and our country called for men, Oswald Johnston, then less than 18 years of age, responded, offering his life in defense of his flag. In line of duty he met the Grim Reaper, and uncomplaining and unafraid made the supreme sacrifice. To men and boys of Oswald Johnston's type, America owes her greatness, and his death has not been in vain. All honor to his memory, peace to his ashes. To the sorrowing parents and other relatives the hearts of all go out in deepest sympathy.
