Cline, Fonda Lee (Pool) (Mrs.)

Mrs. Fonda Lee Cline, 20, of Belleville and her two daughters, Jackie Lee, age 3, and Barbara Ann, 15 months, died of suffocation when their home was destroyed by fire last Friday night. Mrs. Cline's husband, Jimmy Jack Cline, was not injured. Firemen said that he had gone to his parents' house across the street to have them call the fire department. Fire Chief Wayland Kemp of Danville said a call was received at about 11 p.m., but that the woman calling was hysterical and firemen could not get her to say who was calling or where the fire was. They praised the alertness of a Russellville telephone operator, Mrs. Juanita Fields of Atkins, who furnished information that the call was from the Cline residence at Belleville. Chief Kemp said the fire truck was at the scene in less than 10 minutes after receiving the call. He said firemen were told by Jimmy Jack Cline that his wife and babies were still in the house, so all water in the truck was used to cool down the bedroom where they were. Kemp went in through a high window, but was forced out by smoke before locating the mother and children. A hole was then chopped in the wall and a neighbor and firemen risked their lives in removing the bodies. All three were on the floor by a bed. A doctor at the scene said the three were dead from suffocation and artificial respiration failed to revive them. Chief Kemp said the fire apparently started in the front of the house, which was aflame when the fire truck arrived. He said there were no flames visible in the bedroom where Mrs. Cline and the babies were, but that the room was filled with smoke. He praised the fast and efficient action of the firemen in getting the bodies out before the house went up in flames. Belleville has no water system and only water in the truck's storage tank was available. There were only two slight burns on Mrs. Cline's face and no burns on the two children.

Funeral services for the mother and her two children were held Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist Church in Danville, with the pastor, Rev. Jack Bledsoe, officiating. Interment was in Macedonia Cemetery.

Survivors of Mrs. Cline, other than her husband, are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Pool of Danville; two brothers, Mickie Pool and Jerry Pool, both of Danville; and one sister, Mrs. Gene Corbin of Charleston. The children are also survived by their paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cline of Belleville.
