Sandra G. Thompson, 67, long time teacher and reading specialist with Russellville and Little Rock schools, passed away on March 12, 2017. Sandy was a kind and gentle spirit who loved teaching. Her love for, and patience with children was likely a result of her own premature birth and childhood medical struggles. Although she was not expected to live to a full life, Sandy did live and embraced all that life offered. She filled her life with her work, her beloved dachshunds, and of course the human loves of her life, her husband Wayne, son Brent, and granddaughter Cora. Born in Little Rock on February 7th, 1950 to Freeda Keener Wright and Bob Wright, little Sandra battled her physical challenges and excelled early in school.
Later, she survived the split of her parents. As a 6th grader, Sandy moved to Tulsa with her mother, step-father James R. Hancock, and younger sister, Debbie. She graduated from Tulsa's Will Rogers High School and set her sights on college and what would be a 35 year teaching career. While attending college at Northeastern Oklahoma State University in Tahlequah, Sandra met and fell in love with the smooth talking Okie, Wayne G. Thomson. Sandy earned her Bachelor of Education degree and then went on to obtain her Masters in Reading Education from the University of Central Arkansas at Conway. Except for some time during Wayne's military service, the couple was together forever after their marriage on March 11th, 1973. Settling in North Little Rock, where both taught in the public schools and had their only child, Brent. The family later moved to Russellville and took teaching jobs there, where they taught until their retirement a few years ago.
