Charlie "Hick Reeves, age 82, and life-time resident of Yell County, was found dead in his home at Ola last Thursday evening. It was believed that he had been dead about eight days. He lived alone at "Hicks Ranch" as he termed it, near the junction south of Ola. He had been missed by relatives but they though he was either in Hot Springs, where had been going for treatment of erysipelas or visiting other relatives. Mr. Reeves was last seen on Tuesday, September 14, when he talked to his nephew, Mutt Glasgow in Ola, and was driven home by Cecil Holiman. It is believed that he died that or the following day. He had made a trip to and from Little Rock on Monday for treatment and his suitcase was still packed from the trip. On Tuesday, September 21, Mr. Reeves niece, Miss Arena Tilman, reported she passed his house but received no answer to her call and supposed he was gone. On Thursday she went up to the door to see if he was home, was unable to get the front door all the way open and went to Ola for help. The group that returned discover Mr. Reeves body lying against the partially opened front door, in a badly deteriorated condition. Mrs. Lloyd Cornwell acting coroner, was called and a coroner's jury decided that he had died from natural causes. Nothing in the room had been disturbed and his billfold contained some $45. Mr. Reeves, or "Uncle Hick, as he was generally known, was a member of the Petit Jean Lodge 298 and formerly active in politics. Masonic services were conducted Friday afternoon and burial was in the Ola cemetery.
He is survived by two children, a son, V. C. Reeves, and daughter, Mrs. Bernice Ables, both of Los Angeles; two sisters, Mrs. Kate Glasgow and Mrs. Lizzie Tilmon, both of Ola; and two brothers, Joe of Ola and W. B. of Oil Trough, AR.
Editor's Note "Uncle Hick" was a colorful character, about whom old-timers could probably tell a hundred stories more illustrative of his personality, but perhaps this will indicate why he was so widely known. Some time ago he had a sale bill printed here, and besides the tricky wording throughout the bill, it was signed - Hick Reeves, Owner, Charlie Reeves, Manager and C. H. Reeves, Coffee - maker. Having never met him before, we naturally thought three brothers owned the place until we were told different by a friend who read the bill.
