Qualls, Lena Ann

Accident Takes Life of Danville Girl - Tragedy struck the Danville community last week when Lena Ann Qualls, 17, of Danville, died in a traffic accident near Plainview last Thursday. Funeral services for Miss Qualls, a senior at Danville High School, were held at the school cafetorium on Tuesday, where her classmates served as active and honorary pallbearers. Miss Qualls and a friend, Karen Tackett, were returning from Plainview to Danville about 11:00 p.m. on Thursday night when the accident happened on Highway 28, about 1 1/2 miles west of Plainview. Trooper Ralph Lewis, who investigated the accident, said Miss Qualls was apparently killed instantly in the accident, while Miss Tackett escaped serious injuries.

... An Honor Student - Lena was a member of both the junior and senior honor societies and was a winner of All-A ribbons at Danville School for the past several years. She was this past year's school annual yearbook editor and was one of the editor's for the upcoming school year. She was also a member of the French Club and FHA. Lena was a member of the Danville Church Of Christ and Church of Christ Youth Group. She was working at John-Johns in Danville at the time of her death.

... Well-Liked At School - Jerry Gilkey, who has been the class sponsor of Lena's class for the past three years, said Lena was a good student and well-liked by not only the students but by the faculty as well. He said "She was an enjoyable person, warm, friendly and one of the leaders in her class. She had a Sharp mind, was quick-witted and full-of-life." "She was fun to be around and a child that any parent would be proud of. It is hard to accept the death of teenager, such as Lena, but she will be remembered as we all knew her-witty and fun to be around," Gilkey said. Martha Lynn Burks, Lena's English teacher and yearbook advisor said, "I don't know exactly what it was about Lena that made her so special. She loved to act like reading her literature or typing a page for the annual really put her out, but she would change that little frown into a smile and you knew then she enjoyed it." Some of her co-workers at John John's said she was very dependable and was liked by all.

... Loses Control of Vehicle - Trooper Lewis said Lena was traveling west toward Rover when she went around a fairly sharp curve on Highway 28; losing control of her 1981 Toyota pickup. He said she left the north side of the highway, travelled down a shoulder for about 27 feet, travelled down a ditch for 81 feet and entered a wooded area. The truck then struck a large tree head on and the impact caused the truck to spin around, turning over on the right side and travelling another 70 feet before coming to rest. Lena was thrown from the truck about 8 feet from the truck. Trooper Lewis said Karen was not thrown out of the truck and crawled out of the truck to seek help. She mainly suffered scratches. Coroner Mike Cornwell pronounced Lena dead at the scene.

... Native Of Rogers - Lena was a native of Rogers, although she and her parents have been living in Danville for several years.

Survivors include her parents, Glenn and Kewpie Putman Qualls and one brother, Michael Qualls of Corpus Christy, Texas.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the school with Bro. Willis Cheatum and Bro. A. T. Oliver officiating. Internment was at the Earl Ladd Cemetery in Danville. Arrangements and services were conducted by Cornwell Funeral Service of Danville. (WWW.YellCountyObits.org, Published in Yell County Record, Danville, Arkansas, 6-6-1983)
