Ark-La Pipe Line Worker Killed In Accident Near Rover - Ezra Arnold McDowell, age 53, an employee of the Arkansas Louisiana Gas Co. was killed at about noon Saturday in a blasting operation on a pipe line project near Rover. The accident happened northwest of Rover, about six miles off of Highway 27, by way of road and trail.
Coroner Glenn Bailey, who held an inquest following the accident, related the happenings as follows McDowell was a member of a machine crew which was following a dynamiting crew on the project. The machine crew had caught up with the dynamiting and McDowell, who had been with the company about 26 years, was assisting with the dynamiting. Three holes had been loaded with 1 cases of dynamite and McDowell ignited the three 4-foot fuses with his cigarette. The fuses allow about four minutes before setting off the charge. All the men had taken cover but McDowell, who made his way some 350 to 400 feet from the dynamite and stopped to watch. Chester Rachel, foreman of the shoot crew, said that he told McDowell several times to take cover. The first explosion went off without incident. McDowell was apparently moving to take cover when the second explosion occurred and he was struck in the head by a rock. He was about 500 feet from the explosion. Workmen had to wait for the third explosion before going to McDowell, but he had apparently been killed instantly.
