Mom's 85th Birthday was September 24, 2013. It was also, in a symmetry she would appreciate, her last day on this earth. Her faith sustained her and delivered her in the end first from pain and finally to see her family in Heaven. Frances Theodora Williams born September 24, 1928 in a bed in her parents house in Waveland, Arkansas to Harley T. and Mary Williams. On the farm she milked cows and picked cotton growing up during The Depression. She studied Nursing at College of Ozarks and Charity Hospital New Orleans where her apartment was across the street from Audubon Zoo. She could hear lions, wild birds and elephants rather than cows and pigs. That must have been cool for a farm girl who had never been very far out of Yell County, Arkansas. She married Royce B. Mathis in Poteau, Oklahoma on September 3, 1951 and became Frances Williams Mathis. She was a nurse in Poteau and Okmulgee before moving to OKC in 1961 where she worked in the OR at Baptist Hospital while raising two boys, Steven and Robert. She graduated from OSU on the exact same day in 1976 as her oldest son, persevering even after Royce unexpectedly died in 1975. She was a great teacher and would take neighter slacking nor sloppiness in her students. It was rare for her to be admitted to the hospital and not have a former student caring for her. All the nurses who studied under her have said repeatedly "I am a better nurse for having your mom train me".
She leaves behind her cat King Tut, two boys Steven and Robert, one sister Ruby, eleven grandkids and three great grand kids. Shawnee, Oklahoma City, Arkansas and California are filled with people who cherished her friendship and love. She was 5' 2" but she had an outsized personality that cheered up any place she happened to be. She was funny, feisty and sweet as could be. Frances loved animals and gardens and Australia and dolls and sewing. She stitched together beautiful quilts and made a killer cheesecake. I am not sure what else we could add to sum up a life that made everyone around her better for having met her. And in my hour of darkness She is standing right in front of me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be, let it be. Vaya Con Dios Mom A Celebration of Frances' life will be held at St. Paul's Church, 301 N. Beard, Shawnee, OK at 11 AM Saturday, October 19th. This will be an opportunity to share a brief story or memory with everyone else about how she touched your life. There will be refreshments afterwards. In lieu of flowers please make donations to her favorite charity: SPAR (Saving Pets At Risk), PO Box 702, Shawnee, OK 74802 or go to www.sparshawnee.org and make a donation there. They are helping find King Tut a home by the way. (WWW.YellCountyObits.org,Yell County Record Newspaper, Danville, Arkansas, Obituary was published on Oct 9, 2013)
