Born January 21, 1914, in Kiowa County, Oklahoma, our Dad, Ray Edward Marler, lived a full and satisfying life and passed peacefully away into the arms of God on Saturday, April 15, 2006, at the age of 92. A hard-working man all of his life, his advice was, "If you have a job you love, you'll never work another day in your life." His first job was on a golf course and his love of the game became part of the man. If you knew him at all, you knew he loved golf, and he enjoyed playing clear into his 80's. Retired in 1976 to Gresham, Oregon, he was a member of the Operating Engineers Union, Local 701 for 59 years, and loved being a 'cat skinner.' As a young man during the Depression, he rode the rails or hitchhiked to wherever there was work, sending home a part of his earnings to his family in Hobart, Oklahoma.
Finally settling in Oregon, he met his first wife, Bonnie Jean Alexander, who preceded him in death in 1946. He became a skilled carpenter, mechanic, electrician and plumber. Always resourceful and creative, if he needed something - even a tool - he'd often make it himself. In our Dad's case, necessity was the father of invention. {Prov. 8:12 KJV} He was preceded in death by his second wife of 53 years, Zora S. Marler; his daughter Michelle Minkler, California; and son James Mahoney, Oregon.
The youngest son in a family of 11, he is survived by three sisters: Ethel Koebelen, Betty Wyatt and Norma Dean Lorance, all of Oklahoma. Among dozens of grand, great and several great-great-grandchildren, he is also survived by 10 of the 12 children he raised: daughters Ardith Ford, Arizona; Mary L. Murphy and Colleen Donaldson, Washington; Kathleen Mahoney and Sylvia Lindberg, Oregon; sons Bill Marler, California; Michael Mahoney and Dennis Mahoney, Oregon; Patrick Mahoney, Montana; and Larry Mahoney, Wyoming. He often said that he'd had a wonderful childhood and a great life. Our Dad was a gentleman in every sense of the word, with a deep love of family and a simple faith. He will be greatly missed. Contributions in his memory may be made to Mt. Hood Hospice, Gresham, OR.
A Graveside Service was held on April 21, 2006 at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery. It would please the family very much if people would sign the online guestbook at oregonlive.com (WWW.YellCountyObits.org,The Oregonian Newspaper, Portland, Oregon, Obituary was published on on Apr 25, 2006)
