Jenkins, Joey

Joey Jenkins, age 18, a senior at Dardanelle High School, died Tuesday afternoon of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident occurred in an area between the high school building and the gymnasium during the lunch hour. Several students witnessed the shooting, Police Chief Montie Sims said.

Jenkins was the son of Joe and JoAnn Jenkins of Route 2, Dardanelle. Sims said witnesses told him that Jenkins had had an argument with his girlfriend earlier in the day. He left the school campus at around 12:30 and returned about 10 minutes later. Sims said he was told Jenkins went inside the high school building for a minute or so, went back outside, gave some girls a note, got the gun out of his car and fired one shot into his chest. Sims said the 30.06 bullet passed through his chest and exited his back. He was taken by the Yell County Ambulance Service to Dardanelle Hospital, where he died.

Jenkins was a three-year starter on the Sand Lizards football team and was named to the all-district and all-state teams at linebacker after last season. Students at the high school assembled in the gymnasium Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Bill McWeeney, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. They returned to their advisory classes until school was dismissed at around 2:30.

Superintendent B. J. Chandler said a memorial service at the gymnasium at 2 p. m. Thursday is under consideration since that is the only place in town that could accommodate the anticipated crowd. Funeral arrangements will be by Cornwell Funeral Home. (WWW.YellCountyObits.org, Submitted by: Patron, Newspaper: , 2/11/1987)
