A graveside funeral service for Joe Henry Floyd, of Little Rock, who died Saturday in Forrest City, will be held to-day at 2 p.m. at the little Rock National Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Victor Nixon, it should be noted that Mr. Floyd served as Chief Sergeant of the Sergeant-of-Arms for the Arkansas Mouse of Representatives, always wearing a red blazer which established the ongoing tradition followed today,

Joe Henry Floyd - Native served state he loved all his life BY LINDA S. CAILLOUET Arkansas Democrat Gazatte
As a child Joe Henry Floyd, who grew up in rural Arkansas, loved nature and its creatures. One of his fondest memories was of his zoo made up of his pet raccoon, rabbit and fox. Those ties to his Natural Stale remained when he became an adult living in Little Rock, he always had his 3 foot wide patch of garden in his backyard.
During his years with the Arkansas Highway Department, he tried not to let progress steamroll nature. When the Interstate 430 bridge crossing University Avenue was being built, Floyd headed up the project. When a killdeer laid its eggs on the ground in the middle of the project at hand, Floyd ordered his crew to work elsewhere for about three weeks until the eggs hatched and the birds were gone.
Another time on Arkansas 5 in Lonoke County, Floyd used the cleared land on the side of the highway to plant a few acres of turnips He even convinced the operator of the big water tank truck used oil the construction project to water the rows when a dry spell hit. Floyd then shared the vegetables with those who lived nearby.
Floyd, a longtime resident of Little Rock, died Saturday. He was 89. He was born May 6,1909, one of two sons of Ruby Hunt and William Taylor Floyd of Rover His father, who worked as a merchant in his grandfather's store, died when Floyd was 8. A few years later, he moved to Plainville where he met his future wife, Janice Boss. The couple married when she was 16 and he was 18 in the late 1920s. During the 1930s, the family moved to Fort Smith and later to Newport where Floyd bought a Gulf Oil distributorship He lost it during the Depression a year later.
During World War II, his work filling candy machines at the ordnance plant in Jacksonville made him an essential employee and kept him from being drafted until he was reclassified. He was drafted a month before he was 35 and served for a year in World War II in the South Pacific. Back from the war, he again worked servicing vending machines. He had worked as an usher at Travelers Field, and eventually became the groundskeeper and stadium manager, working as Ray Winder's right hand man from the 1950s to the mid 1960s. He loved baseball, but neither of his two sons ever became enamored with the game.
In the early 1900s, Floyd went to work for the highway department inspecting road construction and the ditches and drainage along the roadways. He retired around 1974. He was always hard-working and always kept busy his son. Dr. Bill Floyd of Little Rock, said.
About a year before retiring, Floyd began working as Chief Sergeant of the Sergeant of Arms for the Arkansas House of Representatives. He did that for about 16 years until he was about 80. He was so proud of that Floyd said. He got to meet everybody said Floyd, adding that his father had never met a stranger. While guarding the doors to the House, Floyd decided to wear a red blazer and a red tie. It soon became required dress for the others. Floyd also wore his signature blazer for special occasions and Christmas. He will be buried in it today, his son said. Danville, Ark. Jan 23 - Rev. J. M. Floyd, father of Representative Geo. E. Floyd, died in Belleville Saturday morning and was buried here Saturday. Mr. Floyd was an unsuccessful candidate for chaplain in the house. He returned from Little Rock a week ago and was taken at once with the gout and inflammatory rheumatism, which caused his death five days later. He was 61 and a minister of the Congregational Methodist Church.
He left a widow, four sons and a daughter, all grown. His son George arrived from Little Rock a few hours before his father died. Just two years ago George Floyd who was then as now a member of the legislature was called home on account of the death of his wife, arriving a few hours after her death. Floyd: Rev. Joseph Milton Floyd was born January 18, 1838 in Talladega County, Ala. and died at his home in Belleville, Ark, January 21, 1899. In early manhood he went to Bedford County, Tenn., where he was married to Miss Mary Ann Bennett, who, with four sons and one daughter survive him. He came to Arkansas in 1860 and located near Ozark. In 1861 he enlisted min the Confederate army and served to the close of the war.
In 1866 he came to Conway County, where he lived for 20 years. We are not informed as to the date of his connection with the church He was licensed to preach in the M E Church South, in 1872, and ordained deacon in 1877.
Until his death no one was more zealous in the cause of Christ His services were in demand far and near, and he always responded most cheerfully, visiting the sick, comforting the dying and counseling the bereaved No one gave more time to the ministry than he. He possessed the power of song in a wonderful degree, often in revivals preaching and leading the singing. Often friends would say to us, "I would love to see your father and hear him sing." But, dear friends, father has ceased singing on earth, and joined the orchestra of heaven to sing forevermore. We will, in the sweet by and by, greet him in that beautiful land, of which he so often sang, and hear that loved voice in clearer, sweeter strains. These words, "Father is not expected to live Come at once," came to us like a thunderbolt from a clear sky, and with all possible haste we made our way to Belleville, arriving to find him cold in death. How dear to us now are the promises contained in the Book Devine, and the sweet hope of resurrection. Dear mother, we realize that it will not be long till you, too, are called from earth to meet him you shared the joys and sorrows of earth so long Dear brothers and sister, cheer up, and bear bravely the responsibilities of life, honoring him who so faithfully taught us the way of life. Mrs. Mary Ann Bennett Floyd was born near Shelbyville, Bedford County, Tenn., October 12th, 1837. Professed religion early in life and joined the Baptist Church. Was married to Joseph Milton Floyd October 26, 1858. Soon afterwards she and her husband came to Franklin County, Ark., near Ozark, where I remember her among the first women I ever saw. There she joined the M. E. Church, South, with her husband. Of which church she remained a faithful member until her death.
She was mother of seven children. Two died in infancy. Rev J. C. Floyd of Atkins, Andrew Floyd of Greenwood, Senator George Floyd, Taylor Floyd, and Miss Zetta Floyd of Rover, her children and a host of loving friends mourn her loss. She was sick for some time and died April 19, 1907.
Was buried at Danville, Ark., on the 20th by the side of her husband who had passed on some years before her. A good woman gone from her community. Mr. Tom Joe Floyd age 84, of Forrest City, Arkansas died at the Crittenden Memorial Hospital in West Memphis, on Wednesday, August 29, 2012. Mr. Floyd was born June 23, 1928 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was the son of Joe Henry Floyd and Muriel Janice Ross Floyd. Mr. Floyd was a contractor and a member of the First Baptist Church in Forrest City. He was a Little Rock High School Tiger and was a member of the University of Arkansas Lettermen's Club. Mr. Floyd was very active in the Jaycees, the St. Francis County Wildlife Association and the early Ducks unlimited chapters in Forrest City. Mr. Floyd married Mada Jean McKnight in 1948. She survives him along with a son Terry Floyd of Little Rock; a daughter Tracey Finch of Dumas and a brother Bill Gene Floyd of Little Rock.
He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Mr.
Floyd was preceded in death by a son Tom Joe Floyd II in 1991 and a grandson Darrin Johnson in 2001. A memorial service will be held Saturday September 1, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.

Brother William Taylor Floyd was born near Springfield, Ark., December 10, 1879. When a small boy he moved with his parents to Yell County, Ark.
He was married to Miss Ruby Hunt of Rover in 1906. To this union were born two bright sweet children, Harry, age 10 and Joe age 8.
Brother Floyd was converted under the ministry of Rev. J. H. Goodson, and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church , South of which remained a faithful member until the day of his death which occurred on November 30, 1917. Brother Floyd was a good man; his house was the home of the preacher, his hospitality was unstinted, as every preacher who has had the good fortune to be his pastor will testify. For some time he served the church as Sunday school superintendent, and was both faithful and efficient. He read our church literature and kept himself informed as to the progress of the kingdom of God and felt a keen interest in every enterprise of the church. Though a great sufferer, he bore it with the true Christian fortitude and when the end came no cloud bedimmed his sky. To the bereaved ones left behind let me say, Weep not as those who have no hope; only be true to God and you will meet him again in the land of the unsetting sun W. E. Hall.

Gary Carlas Flud age 64 of London died Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at his home. He was born August 17, 1949 at Eufaula, Ok to the late Nathaniel Manuell and Ruby Gertrude Brackett Flud. He loved to ride horses, was a truck driver for 25 years and a United States Marine Verteran of the Vietnam War.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James Flud, Glen Flud, Winferd Flud, Nathaniel Flud Jr.
Survivors include his wife Linda Kay Flud of London; two daughters, Tammy Flud and Sandra Flud both of California; one son, Brian Flud of London; two stepsons, Joe Owens of Texas and Jason Owens of Tenneessee; brothers, Woody Flud of California, T.L. Flud of Texas; sisters, Shirley Trimmer of London, Leverne Bolden of Russellville; nine grandchildren, one great grandchild on the way and many other relatives and friends.

Winferd Lewis "Shorty" Flud, age 57, of Atkins, AR died Saturday evening, October 4, 1997 at his home. He was born in Eufaula, OK, son of the late Nathan Manuel Flud. He was a retired farmer and an Army Veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene Young Flud of Atkins; his mother, Ruby Brackett Flud of Weatherford, TX; two daughters, Rolinda Corzine and Julie Hall both of Mt. George; five brothers, James Ray Flud of Lonoke, Woodrow Flud of California, Thurman Flud of Weatherford, TX, Nathaniel Flud of Atkins and Gary Flud of London, AR; two sisters, Shirley Trimmer of London, AR and Donna Bolden of Russellville, AR; two step sons; three step-daughters; four grandchildren and three step grandchildren.
Graveside service was October 7, 1997 at the Atkins City Cemetery with Rev. Don Shipley officiating. Mrs. Arthur. D. Flurry dead. The entire community was saddened last Saturday by the passing away of Mrs. Arthur Flurry. She was born April 10th, 1885. On August 23rd, 1903, she was united in marriage to A. D. Flurry. To this union, were born nine children, five of whom survive; Mrs. Wm D. Cox of Conway; Hilda, Wanda, Naomi, and A. D. Flurry, Jr. of this city. Three brother survive; Thos. V. Jones, of this city; Roy K, Jones, of Kingsman, Arizona, and Billie Jones of San Pedro, California; also two sisters Mrs. Elbert Garrott of Russellville and Mrs. B. B. Blevins, of Dardanelle.
At the age of 15, Mrs. Flurry united with the Methodist Church upon profession of her faith in Christ. For several years she was the leading influence for good In the Mt. Zion Church. From the time of her moving to Dardanelle to the time of her death she was a devoted and loyal member of the Church here. She was as regular in attendance at her health permitted at Sunday school and all church activities. Her faith was implicit and in her going, everyone realized that she was going to her reward. Her beautiful character, her devotion to her home and her family, and her deeds of kindness in her neighborhood will forever insure for her a large place in our thoughts.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Sam B. Wiggins from the family residence and interment made in Mt. Zion cemetery, on the lot where her mother was buried only two weeks before. Bonnie Lula Flurry, age 88, of Dardanelle died Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at Dardanelle Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born March 24, 1926 to the late Jake and Rhoda Smith Lott. She was a Christian, loved playing bingo, Find a Word Puzzles, crocheting and quilting, shelling pecans and watching the Texas Rangers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph "Buddy" Flurry Sr.; son, Ralph Flurry Jr., granddaughter, Candy Moro, brothers, Buster, Veldy, Garvin"Bigum", Leroy "Bunk", Jay, George, Carl, Homer and Russell, sister, Ila Smith.
Survivors include one son, Robin Flurry and wife Cheryl of Coal Hill; one daughter, Rhonda Wade of Dardanelle; one sister, Marie Darter of Dardanelle; two grandchildren, Shanon (Kim)Wade of Russellville, Carmen Flurry (Jonathan) Halbert three great grandchildren, Jared Wade of Russellville, Blake Wade of Texas and Brooke Lewis of Russellville.

Clara Marie Flurry, age 92 of Delaware, widow of Thomas Elbert Flurry died Thursday, March 27, 2003 in Brownwood, Texas. She was born July 28, 1910 in Delaware to the late G. C. and Dovie Smith Wurst. She was a homemaker and mother and a member of the Assembly of God Church in Delaware.
She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Flurry; a daughter, Kathryn Kliewer, two brothers, G. C. Wurst, Roger Wurst and two sisters, Carrie Kliewer and Leta Garrison.
Survivors are two sons and daughter-in-law, Keith and Betty Flurry and Henry Dixon, both of Delaware; two daughters and son-in-law, Marsha Jordan of Richland Springs, Texas and Kay and Joe Daughdrill of Brookhaven, Mississippi; two brothers, Houston Wurst of Ft. Smith and Fred Wurst of Paris; four sisters, Ruth Ware, June Campbell and Jicie Richardson, all of Delaware, Rose Humphrey of Paris and Maude Spicer of Camdon; 13 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

In Memory of Mrs. Gertie Flurry. Our hearts were saddened last Saturday morning, February 15, 1936, when the Death Angel claimed its victim Mrs. Gertie Johnson Flurry, age 38 years, of Delaware, Arkansas. Mrs. Flurry was born and reared at Delaware, where she spent her entire life.
Beautiful in character, sweet, generous, talented and accomplished, a loyal friend and sister and an untiring worker. She was thoughtful of others, forgetful of self at all times. A joy it was to her to lend a helping hand wherever an opportunity presented itself. She loved all near and dear to her with a great love. Many times has she stood by the bedside of her own family through sickness. She will be missed so much, not only in the home, but in church and in the community and in all its activities. But it was God's will that she go, and our loss is Heaven's gain. Earth was made dearer with her here and Heaven is nearer now since she is there. In suffering and pain she exhibited great patience. God, in his loving kindness will no doubt mete out to her an extra reward for all things done while here. We miss our dear one more than we can tell, but on the other hand we know and feel that she lives with God and His angels, where she experiences joy and happiness beyond our understanding, for all eternity in Heaven where some day we hope to meet her again. Oh, consoling thought, and wonderful reality, comprehended only by those whose religion has taught them to believe in its Supreme Being. Her spirit will live on forever and hover near us and remind us of her many loving deeds and virtue worthy of imitation.
The funeral service, in charge of the Fentress Mortuary of Ft. Smith, was held at the Assembly of God Church Sunday at 2 p. m. being conducted by Rev. L. L. Riley, Pastor of the Assembly of God Church of Russellville. Interment was in Graves Cemetery.

Funeral services conducted by Rev. Chas. F. Wilkins, of this city, were held at the Thos. M. Flurry home Saturday, burial being in Mt, Zion Cemetery.
Mr. Flurry was born in Boling Green, Ky. May 12, 1839. He was married to Miss Nancy R. Mandy in 1860. At the outbreak of the Civil War he joined the forces of the Confederacy and served with honor and devotion throughout that long and bloody struggle. He had been a member of the Methodist Church for nearly half a century.
