Charles H. Cowger, 88, long time resident of Yell county, died at the family home Tuesday afternoon, following a long illness, which kept him confined to his bed for 12 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife on February 24 this year. He was a member of an early Yell countv family and was a son of the late Jacob and Elizabeth Holland Cowger. Mr. Cowger was a Baptist and was active in community and political affairs until his illness.
He is survived by four sons, Neil, Paul and J. B. of Chickalah and Stanley Cowger of Kansas City; five daughters, Mrs. Irl Darr of Atkins, Mrs. Thomas Cotton of Dardanelle, Mrs. John Ward and Mrs. Harry Gremillion of Kansas City and Mrs. Fred Hargis of Springfield, Mo.; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Cleo Jasper Cowger, age 88, of Danville died Saturday, May 16, at Mitchells Nursing Home in Danville. Cowger was a native of Corley, AR, son of the late J. I. and Ophelia Hunnicut Cowger. He was a retired business man, a life-long resident of Yell County, and member of the Danville First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Audra Amos Cowger; two daughters, Betty George of Danville and Jimmie Morris of Paris; one brother, Earnest Cowger of Lubboch, Texas; one sister, Leah Millsap of Pine Bluff seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p. m. Monday, May 18, in the Danville First Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby Walker and Rev. Sam Williams officiating. Mrs. Cora Smith Cowger, 82, native of Dardanelle, died at the family home at Chickalah Monday night, where she had lived all her married life. She had been seriously ill since last July, and had been ill for several years. Mother Cowger was aways very active in church and civic affairs, until her health failed several years ago. She was a member of the Methodist church.
Besides the husband she is survived by four sons, Paul, Neil and J. B. Cowger, all of Chickalah and Stanley Cowger of Kansas City; five daughters, Mrs. Irl Darr of Atkins; Mrs. Thomas Cotton of Dardanelle; Mrs. Fred Hargis of Springfield, Mo., Mrs. John Ward and Mrs. H. E. Gremillion of Kansas City, Mo., 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Edith Heath Cowger, age 58, of Danville, passed away Thursday morning, September 9, at her horne. Mrs. Cowger was a native of Danville, a Retired secretary with the Seller Brothers Plumbing of Houston, Tex. She is the daughter of Mrs. C. E. Donham and the late Arthur Heath. She Was a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Cleo Cowger of Danville; three step-daughters, Mrs. Lloyd George and Mrs. Jimmie Morris both of Danville and Mrs. Mildred Galt of North Little Rock; three sisters, Mrs, Ethel Hopkins of Little Rock, Mrs. Ruth Easterling and Mrs. Marie Snowden both of Houston.

George Cowger, 95, of Danville, passed away on Tuesday, November 01, 2005. He was a longtime teacher, principal and superintendent at Belleville School and a former graduate of Danville School.

George D. Cowger, age 95 of Danville, died Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at his home. He was born June 16, 1910 in Danville to the late Dr. Thomas N. and Hattie Sipes Cowger. He was a graduate of Danville High School and received his Bachelor's degree in education from Southeastern State Teachers College in Du-rant, OK in 1937. He served in the education field for over forty years, thirty of those years as the Belleville superintendent. During this time he and his late wife of 67 years, Irene, helped hundreds of students with medical care, taking care of costs associated with eye doctors, vowed that none of his students would go without a hot lunch. He also paid for a number of his students' college education and getting them started in their chosen careers. He was a cattleman and poultry farmer for over thirty years, but his great love was is race horses, Symmetric, which won a number of races for him. What most people will remember him for is the wonderful gifts that he gave to Belleville, Western Yell County, Danville, and Fourche Valley Schools, saying that he wanted to help the kids in the schools. The gifts he gave totaled in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Danville and in 1924 at the age of 14 was baptized.
Survivors are numerous cousins, students, fellow teachers, and friends.

Irene E. Cowger, age 89, of Danville. AR died Sunday, May 30, 2004 at Chambers Memorial Hospital in Danville. She was born May 2, 1915 in Blue, Oklahoma to the late Bluman and Beulah Shipp Stillwell. She graduated from Southeastern College in Durant with a teaching degree and retired after many years of teaching. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Danville and the Retired Teachers Association.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Leslie Stillwell and a sister, Elsie Tetty.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, George Cowger; three sisters and brother-in-law, Francis and Bob Bradley of Colorado Springs, CO, Chris Anderson of Grand Saline, TX and Tennie Bertram of Minneola, TX and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Service was June 1, 2004 at the First Baptist Church in Danville with Rev. Jamie Staley officiating. Interment was in Earl Ladd Cemetery by Cornwell Funeral Home of Danville. CHICKALAH - J. B. "Pete" Cowger of Chickalah, died Friday, July 6, 1984 at his home. He was the son of the late Charles Henry and Cora N. Smith Cowger. He was a retired cattle rancher, a member of the Chickalah United Methodist Church and a retired member of the Arkansas National Guard.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbie Cowger of Chickalah; a stepson, Don Nelley of Russellville; five sisters, Martha Darr and Anne Hargis of Russellville, Selma Cotton of Dardanelle, Betty Gremillion of Mission, Kan. and ZelIa Ward of Leawood, Kan. and three grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a. m, Monday, July 9, at Chickalah United Methodist Church by the Rev. Rick Rice and the Rev. Max Whitfield. James Ira Cowger, 79, civic leader, pharmacist and farmer, who formerly was a teacher and at one time Yell County School Supervisor, died at the clinic here Saturday. After he left the teaching profession, he was in the mercantile business in Gravelly before moving to Danville in 1920. Soon afterwards he opened the Cowger Drug Store. He was a deacon in Danville Baptist Church and a Sunday school teacher.
In addition to his widow, Mrs. Ophelia Cowger of Danville, he is survived by three sons, Cleo of Danville, J. I. Jr. of Abilene, Texas, and E. L. of Fabens, Texas; four daughters, Mrs. R. C. Parks of Belleville, Miss Vivian Cowger of Danville, Mrs. Roy McNeal of Nimrod and Mrs. R. B. Mills of North Little Rock; a brother, Will of Wyandotte, Mich. and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Jane Hudson of Ft. Smith, Mrs. Fronia Tinsley and Mrs. Lydia Smith of Paris.

John P. "Flip" Cowger, age 87 of Dardanelle died Monday, March 1, 2010 at his home. He was born April 18, 1922 at Garden Bottoms to the late John H. and Maude (Limbird) Cowger.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Daisy Elizabeth Walker of Russellville, Edna McKeown of Dardanelle; and his wife Sarah Frances (Bost) Cowger of 65 years from Atkins.
Flip attended Dardanelle Elementary School; graduated from High School at Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri and completed one year of college at Wentworth before being drafted as a commissioned Officer for the Army in 1942. Flip transferred from the Infantry to the Army Air Corps and served as a pilot on the B-24 (Liberator) Bomber during World War II. In 1944, on his 21st mission, his plane was shot down over Stuttgart, Germany. He was the only survivor of a crew of ten and became a prisoner of war for seven months in a German Prison Hospital. He suffered a broken back and burns when he parachuted from the burning plane, and later caught pneumonia. He received the Purple Heart and the Air Medal with Clusters. Flip received the Pillar of Progress Award in 1982 from the Dardanelle Chamber of Commerce. He was honored by the Chamber of Commerce as the Grand Marshall of the Christmas Parade in 1983. He was a former President of the Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Mt. Nebo Chicken Fry for two years. Flip was a founding member of the Yell County Mounted Patrol where he was Commander for 20 years and was the instigating person for the Rodeo Grounds being built. He received the Fourth Quarter Award from the Dardanelle Sand Lizards Boosters in 1983. He was a farmer, a member of the Dardanelle Methodist Church, Dardanelle Industries, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Dardanelle Hospital Board, Dardanelle Housing Authority, and was a 32nd degree Mason. Flip was the retired director of the State Selective Service System where he worked for 25 years.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Philip B. and Betty Cowger of Russellville, John W. and Cathey Cowger of El Dorado; four grandchildren, Scarlet Yeager of Conway, Sarah Cowger of Russellville, Alan Cowger and Amber Cowger of El Dorado.
Memorial Service was March 5, 2010 at the Dardanelle United Methodist Church. Mrs. Johnnie Stewart Cowger, age 62, of Danviile died Friday at the Yell County Hospital. Mrs. Cowger was a native of Plainview, a retired housewife, a daughter of Lee Stewart and the late Mima Purcley and a member of the Danville First Baptist Church.
Survivors include, other than her father, her husband, Cleo Cowger; two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Reed George and Mrs. Jimmie Morris, both of Danville; two sisters, Mrs. Selma Sloan of Hot Springs and Mrs. Lillian Floyd of Texas City, Tex. and seven grandchildren.

Naomi Horn Cowger, age 89, of Dardanelle, AR died Saturday, June 16, 2007 at the Dardanelle Nursing Center. She was born November 21, 1917 in Belleville, AR a daughter of J. R. (Jimmy) and Ollie Rutledge Horn. She was a homemaker and a member of the Chickalah United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Neil Bowie Cowger; five brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Robert Cowger, 43, born in Danville, August 15, 1898 but long a resident of Danville, where he was one of Yell County's most popular men, later at Russellville and at Morrilton, where he died in the St. Anthony Hospital, December 9. Mr.
Cowger is survived by his wife, Lola Bice Cowger, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Cowger, sisters, Mrs. Robert Parks, Gravelly, Mrs. Roy McNeal, Nimrod, Mrs. Barb Mills, Haskel and Miss Vivian of the home and brothers, James I. Jr., Brownsville, Tenn., Ernest L., Conway; and Cleo Cowger, Danville. A short service was held at the Reed Chapel, Morrilton, by Rev. L. E. Ashley and Rev. J. A. Gatlin at 1:30 p.m.
and the funeral service at Danville was in the Baptist church at 3:30, with services by Rev. Wilson Dees and Rev. Chas Finch who delivered the sermon. Pall bearers were Peal Gordon, Ozark, Rollan Cardon, Russellville, Lynn Wilson, Buford Compton, Wing, Willie Caviness and Bob Caviness, Gravelly. Special music was The Old Rugged Cross, beautifully rendered by Mrs. Raymond Lewis. Mrs. Robert P. Cowger, aged 72, widow of Dr. Robert P. Cowger, died here Sunday, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Begoon. Mrs. Cowger was a native of Chickalah and moved to Danville in 1904. She was a member of the Older of the Eastern Star and was a Baptist.
She is survived by four sons, Aubrey Cowger of Danville, Robert Cowger of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Dan Cowger of Anaheim, Calif. and Charles Cowger of El Dorado; three other daughters, Mrs. W. G. Mrs. Ruth Lewis Cowger, age 45, of Danville died of cancer at the Yell County Hospital Tuesday morning. She was a native of Yell County and member of the Danville Methodist Church.

Stanley L. Cowger, 70, a native of the Chickalah community, died Monday, September 26, at a Kansas City, Mo. Hospital. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Cowger of Chickalah, a Navy veteran of World War I, and a Methodist. He was a retired employee of the Kansas City Gas Co.

Thelma Gibbs Cowger, 90, of Dardanelle, died Friday, October 23, 2009, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Russellville, Arkansas. She was born October 27, 1918 in Malvern, Arkansas.
She is preceded in death by husband, Jackson K. Cowger; parents, Stella and Grover Gibbs; brothers, Bobby and Lawrence Gibbs; sister, Marquerite Black; and grandson, Clay Long.
Survivors include three daughters, Jill Sheets and husband Steve of Dardanelle, Jacquelyn Long of Bryant, Patricia Faught of Columbia, Maryland; grandchildren, Justin Sheets and wife Kala, Kayla Sheets all of Dardanelle, Clay Long of Russellville, Keith Long of Ft. Smith, Bill Faught of Columbia, Maryland, Jenna Bisegger and husband Jeff of Eldersburg, Maryland; great grandchildren, Parker Sheets of Dardanelle, Katlyn and Allison Bisegger of Eldersburg, Maryland; sisters, Frances Chandler and husband Jim of Haskell, and Janet Davis of Jacksonville.

DANVILLE - Miss Vivian Cowger, age 83, of Danville died June 7, 1984 at the Yell County Hospital at Danville. She was a retired sales clerk and a member of the First Baptist Church at Danville.
Survivors include three brothers, Cleo Cowger of Greenwood, James Cowger of Gulfport, Miss. and Ernest Cowger of Lubbock, Texas, and two sisters, Mrs. Allie Parks of Danville and Mrs. Leah Mills of Pine Bluff.

Arthur Bentley Cox (A.B.) age 94 of Dardanelle died Saturday, December 22, 2012. He was born July 25,1918, in Dardanelle, Arkansas to the late Daniel Thomas and Love Howell Cox. A.B. was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII where he served as a medical corpsman on the hospital ship the U.S.S. Bountiful in the South Pacific and was a member of the Boyce-Woods VFW Post 3141 in Dardanelle. He was a lifelong member of the Dardanelle First United Methodist Church where he served throughout the years on the Board of Trustees and the Administrative Council. He was a member of many civic clubs, organizations, and boards. He was active in the Dardanelle Chamber of Commerce serving two terms as president. In 1988 he was the recipient of the Exceptional Accomplishment Award presented by the Chamber of Commerce and the Arkansas Community Development Program. He was co-chair of the Dardanelle Dam dedication, president of the Dardanelle Board of Industries, and served as chairman of the Yell County March of Dimes. A.B. was past president of the Arkansas Association of Professional Insurance Agents, a charter member of the Dardanelle Rotary Club, receiving the Paul Harris Award, a charter member of the Yell County Mounted Patrol and Yell County Wildlife Federation. A.B. was very active in the Boy Scouts of America serving on the Westark District Council. He was the recipient the Silver Beaver Award and was proud of the fact that his three sons were Eagle Scouts. His greatest passions were quail hunting, dogs and horses. In 2005 he was inducted into the Arkansas Bird Dog Hall of Fame. He organized the Pullen Pond Field Trial and served as field trial chairman for 30 years. He was secretary and treasurer of the Arkansas Field Trial Association (Southwest Championship) in Booneville, Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by sons, Arthur Bentley Cox, Jr. and Louis Morgan Cox; grandson, Louis Morgan Cox, Jr.; brothers, James Cox and Thomas Cox, and sisters, Camille Adams and Celeste Thurman.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Jean Morgan Cox of Dardanelle, son Tommy Cox and wife Dinah of Dumas; daughters-in-laws, Debbie Cox of Dallas, Texas, and Liz Cox of Rogers, Arkansas; grandchildren, Howell Cox, Molly Pilkington, Meredith Finney, Ben Cox , Celeste Cox and 6 great grandchildren. Family will receive guests Saturday, December 29, 10:00 -11:00 at Dardanelle First United Methodist Church.

Chaplain Colonel Billy Howard Cox (U.S. Army retired) of Jacksonville, died Thursday, February 6, 2014 at the age of 85. He was born February 27, 1928 in Huntsville to the late Roscoe Harrison Cox and Laura Calico Cox. After graduating from Hendrix College where he played basketball, he attended seminary and earned his Master's Degree from Southern Methodist University. Reverend Cox served as a United Methodist minister for 67 years, 29 of which were as a Chaplain in the U.S. Army.
In addition to his parents, Reverend Cox was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Bobby Cox.
Reverend Cox is survived by his wife, Delle Woodard Cox; four sons, William Howard Cox and Timothy Christian Cox, both of Nashville, Tennessee, Thomas Whitney Cox of Graham, North Carolina and Jonathan Marcus Cox of Fairview, Tennessee; fifteen grandchildren and one sister, Betty Gaskill of Huntsville.

Bobby Cox, age 60, of Greenwood, AR, died Sunday, June 22, 1997 at his home. He was retired from Acee-Hiland Dairy and was co-owner of Food Plus Grocery Stores. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War, member of the Greenwood Round Up Club, member of the American Brahman Association and was a major supporter of the Junior Livestock Auction of the Sebastian County Fair.
He is survived by his wife, Willo Cox of the home; one daughter, Georgeanna Cox of Rudy, AR; one step-daughter, Sue Carpenter of Ft. Smith; one son, Darren Cox of Greenwood; step-mother, Anna Cox of Greenwood; six sisters, Mary Ann Pitts of Springfield, MO, Betty Reano and Glenda Wallace both of Jenny Lind, AR, Patsy Jones of Ft. Smith, Charlcie McEntryre of Garland, TX and Doris DeGolier of Austin, TX; two brothers, Jerry Cox of Greenwood and Jack Harris of Dallas, TX; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Service was today, June 25, 1997, at the McConnell Funeral Home Chapel in Greenwood. Burial was in the Liberty Cemetery in Greenwood. Bobby Joe "Bob" Cox, age 68 of Ola departed this Earth to be with our Lord on Sunday, August 27, 2006 at Chambers Memorial Hospital in Danville. Born November 22, 1937 in Plainview, he was the son of the late Olgar and Lillie Mae Gallion Cox. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ola and a carpenter for 30 years. He assisted in building lock and damns all around the United States, helped build the old Russellville School and the construction of AR Nuclear 1, and was a volunteer ambulance driver for Yell County.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Holbert Cox.
Survivors include four daughters and son-in-law, Donna and Glendon Graham of Mt. George, Dianne Foster and Susan Cavins both of Ola, Bobbie Meredith of Springdale; brother, Billy Cox of Santa Barbara, CA; two sisters, Evola Whitlow of Plainview, Nina Jean Davis of St. Louis, MI; nine grandchildren, Jacquelyn McKern, Nicholas Graham, Dylan Foster, Joshua Foster, Alicia Foster, Nicole Meredith, Kacie Marshall, Ashley Cavins and Matthew Cavins and three great-grandchildren, Emily and Allison Foster and Paris Enriquez; host of nieces and nephews and JoAnn Barnes Marshall, the mother of his children.

DARDANELLE - Mrs. Cathryn Moore Cox, age 69, of Dardanelle died today at her home. She was a native of Centerville, daughter of the late Elmer and Grace Shepherd Moore.
