Christensen, Peggy Jeanne

Forever sweet and caring, Peggy Christensen, age 83, passed away peacefully at her home in Saratoga on May 24 after a brief illness, surrounded by her daughter, Terin Christensen of Danville, granddaughter, Krisan Christensen of Boulder, CO, son, Dane Christensen and daughter-in-law, Jay Christensen of Oakland. She was predeceased in death by her husband, Dane Christensen, in 2005. Peggy was born at her grandmother's house on December 22, 1929 in Mena, Arkansas and moved to Berkeley, Calif. at age 2. As a young girl she greatly enjoyed roller skating with friends through the surrounding neighborhoods and figure skating at Berkeley Iceland. After graduating from Berkeley H.S. she attended City College of San Francisco where she met and eventually married her husband of almost 55 years. Peggy and Dane moved their family around California's central valley and briefly to New Jersey before happily settling in Saratoga for nearly 50 years. Here, Peggy made a comforting and inviting home for family and friends alike, dabbling in oil painting, weekend gardening, and loved to entertain and ensure all those who entered her home were graciously cared for. She became a favorite of her children's friends, whom affectionately called her Mrs. "C." The home was always tastefully decorated to match the season and holiday and, by own estimate, collected over 1,000 Christmas tree ornaments. Outside the home, Peggy spent ten happy years working at Evy's Bath and Candle Shop in Saratoga. She took an active role as a Brownie and Girl Scouts leader, volunteered with Arc Angels of Red Cross of San Jose, provided charitable work for Oz Auxiliary of Children's Home Society and Inner Wheel of Saratoga. She always graciously donated to her children's various charitable fundraisers. Peggy and Dane delighted in treating themselves to exotic travels such as riding on The Royal Scotsman into the heart of Scotland's highlands, taking the transatlantic supersonic flight aboard Concorde jet, cruising around the Tierra del Fuego, and enjoying the breathtaking open wilderness on a Kenyan safari. She especially enjoyed her annual birthday getaway celebration to San Francisco's Nob Hill. She will be fondly remembered for her generous spirit, the kindness in her heart, quick witted humor, and ability to put on the perfect finishing touches. She was a great neighbor and loving mother, giving respect to all and one of the nicest persons you will ever know. There will be a private family service. The family requests in lieu of flowers, gifts are made in Peggy's memory to Inner Wheel, USA Foundation, Inc., c/o Connie Abrams, 356 Snapdragon Lane, Lincoln, CA 95648-8162 or Montalvo Arts Center, PO Box 158 Saratoga, CA 95071-0158 (WWW.YellCountyObits.org,San Jose Mercury News/ San Mateo County Times Newspaper, San Mateo, California, Obituary was published on June 2, 2013)

Deputy Sheriff Alvin Stutts, of Hector, arrested Church Sunday morning and brought him to Russellville, where he is held pending an investigation. From information brought to the city by the deputy sheriff, the two youths, who had had no previous quarrel, engaged in a fight while drunk, with the result that Jess Church was severely wounded by being struck over the head with a club and Preacher Church lost his life. After the fight Jess went to the home of his girl, who accompanied him to the dance, and spent the night. When he awoke the next morning he was told that he killed his brother. Both the youths are sons of a prominent farmer, Marion Church, who lives about 30 miles inland, in Jackson township. Church will be given a preliminary hearing as soon as the facts can be established by the officers.
