Limbird, Mark (Rev.)

Rev. Mark Limbird, aged 90 years and two months, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Cowger, at 2:46 o'clock Sunday afternoon, June 3rd, 1928, after an illness of but a few days.

The funeral service, conducted by Rev. Sam B. Wiggins, Pastor of the First Methodist, were held at the Cowger home at 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon, and concluded at 3 o'clock at Oak Grove Cemetery where the remains of the venerated old preacher and gallant old Soldier of the Cross were laid to rest beside the mound whereunder rests his life's companion. No citizen of Arkansas was more universally loved or more highly respected than Brother Limbird. Through a span of years exceeding the Biblical allotment by more than a score, he had devoted his time, his talents and his efforts to benefit his fellows, and his consecration to the cause of his Master has wrought a work that will bear fruit in generations yet unborn. Mr. Limbird was born at Bicker-Lincolnshire, England, April 8th, 1838. He came to America when 16 years of age locating first in Ohio. In 1861 he enlisted in Co. K., 16th Ohio Regiment, and fought with gallantry and distinction until captured near the close of the memorable struggle. In 1868 he was converted and joined the Methodist Church. He was licensed to preach the same year, and since then, for 60 years continuously, he has preached God's Word to sinful humanity, seldom receiving more than a pittance for his work, but surely building up a wonderful treasure in that happy land to which he now has gone. Rev. Limbird was united in marriage in 1868, his wife preceding bim to the better world about two years ago. To this union 13 children were born, 10 of whom survive, as follows: Henry Limbird, George Limbird, Mark Limbird, Mrs. Ethel Cox, Mrs. Maud Cowger, Mr., Mae Campbell, Mrs. Willie Atchinson, Mrs. Hattie Hale, Mrs. Laura Farmer and Mrs. Ida Dean. The Post-Dispatch joins the hosts of friends in extending to the bereaved ones its deep sympathy in their loss. (WWW.YellCountyObits.org,Dardanelle Post-Dispatch Newspaper, Dardanelle, Arkansas, Obituary was published on June 7, 1928)

Limbird, Mary

LOVING MEMORY OF A NOBLE CHRISTIAN WOMAN -- Mrs. Mary Limbird, wife of Rev. Mark Limbird, died on the night of November 9th, 1926, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ida Dean, on Chickalah Mountain. Mrs. Limbird was born in Indiana September 23rd, 1852. With her parents she moved to Missouri in 1868. She was converted in 1868 and joined the M. E. Church, South. She was married to Rev. Mark Limbird November 1st, 1868. To this union were born thirteen children, eight girls and five boys, ten of whom are living to mourn their great loss; also sixty-one grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren, and none of them need blush when they hear her name spoken. At the time of her death Mrs. Limbird was 74 years, one month and sixteen days old and had been married fifty-eight years. If she had an enemy I don t know it.

One Who Knew Her Somehow the Post-Dispatch feels that the above brief outline of the life history of the noble lady who on last week, with sublime faith and serene peace, closed her tired eyelids and passed to the loving arms of the gentle Savior in whose cause and for whose glory she had spent so many busy, useful, happy years, fails to do justice to a character so noble--to a life so gloriously lived. It was not the pleasure of the writer to know Mrs. Limbird personally, but it was a pleasure and privilege to know, during the quarter-century we have lived here, of her almost daily acts of Christian kindness and charity, of how she nursed the sick, comforted the distressed, fed the hungry and clothed the naked.

She was a happy Christian, one who brought sunshine where shadow too often dwelt. She believed in prayer, in faith, in meekness; and surely she must have believed that "faith without works is dead." Mrs. Limbird reared a large family in the fear and admonition of the Lord; she brought them up to be honorable, useful, Christian men and women, a credit to their parents, and to their country. Mrs. Limbird loved her Bible; she read it, she studied it, and she at all times endeavored to follow its teachings; and those who best knew her constant acts of Christian service feel that surely there must be many gems in the crown she wears in that happy place to which she has gone, for did not the Savior say, "for in as much as ye did it unto one of the least of these my brethern, ye did it unto me."

To her aged husband, Rev. Mark Limbird, valiant old Soldier of the Cross, whose hoary head, silvered by the passage of near ninety winters, is bowed in grief at the departure of his life's companion, our hearts go out in tenderest sympathy. Yet though grievous his loss and bitter his sorrow, he can smile through his tears, for with faith sublime and unfaltering he too knows that yet a little while and a glorious and never ending reunion will be had on that other shore where partings cease and sorrows never come. And to the sorrowing children also would we extend our condolence, and admonish them, and all others who knew and loved their sainted mother, to emulate her example and thus rob the grave of its victory and death of its sting.
