Lastovka, Albert

Albert Pigeon, aged 59 years, a prosperous and respected Bohemian farmer living three miles southwest of town just south of the Fort Smith road, shot and instantly killed his wife shortly after 1 p.m. Monday afternoon, and a few moments later, using the same weapon, a single-barrel shotgun, ended his own life by blowing out his brains; it is the thought that Pigeon was temporarily deranged, it being alleged that for several years he had been slightly unbalanced mentally. There were no eye witnesses to the awful tragedy; the lifeless body of Mrs. Pigeon was found lying upon a bed by her son, who gave the alarm and summoned medical aid from this city. Dr. F. R. Sweet, accompanied by his wife, responded to the call; on his arrival, learning that a crime had been committed, he returned hurriedly to town and notified the officers; at this time the body of Mr. Pigeon had not been discovered, it being reported that he had fled to the woods near his home, taking his gun with him. Headed by City Marshall S.G. Albright a large posse was formed and rushed to the scene, for some time searching the woods for the slayer; in the mean time a jury was empanelled and an inquest started by Justice of the peace W.C. Hunt over the remains of Mrs. Pigeon. An examination showed that the unfortunate women had been shot with a shot gun, the entire charge, fired from a distance of but a few feet, entering her right side eight inches below the arm pit; while the jury was preparing its verdict, searches brought word that the lifeless body of Mr. Pigeon had been discovered in the loft of a smokehouse within 50 feet of the house in which he had killed his wife; he had climbed to the loft, a tiny compartment ordinarily used for the storage of fruit jars, presumably to hide, and doubtless realizing the futility of escape had placed the muzzle of his weapon in his right ear and literally blown out his brains. Mr. and Mrs.

Pigeon were natives of Bohemia, where they were married before emigrating to this country about forty years ago; they are survived by six children, four daughters, and two sons, as follows; Mrs. Mary Jacob, of near Russellville; Mrs. Josie Tahoski, and Mrs. Fred Kraz of Dardanelle; Mrs. Rosie Balian of Hot Springs; Van and Mack Pigeon, who lived with their parents.

Funeral services were held at the family home Tuesday afternoon, interment being made in Brearley cemetery. There is a large Colony of Bohemians here; they are recognized as thrifty, honest, law-abiding people, and during the nearly half-century since they took up their home here this is the first crime of violence to be committed by one of their number.
