Havner, Martin Berry (Rev.), Sr.

On the first day of April 1910 at home in Walnut Tree, Ark., M. Havner answered the final summons and on the 3rd of said month, his mortal remains were laid to rest in his adopted state. Mart, as he was familiarly called, was born and raised in this county on the farm now owned by Tom and Harve Deakins, and Marion county never gave to the world a more noble, honest and true man in all the relations of life. It was the fortune of the writer to know him in all the walks of life. In the early spring of 1861 we enlisted together in Capt. Joe Bostick's company and were attached to the 4th Tennessee Confederate Regiment - served in 1861 and 1862 in East Tennessee and Kentucky under Gen. E. Kirby Smith; then with Maney's Brigade, Cheatham's Division. To the close of the war he participated in all the battles from Murfreesboro to Atlanta and was dangerously wounded in the campaign around Atlanta. It was thought that he could not recover, but a strong constitution coupled with sober habits aided in his recovery. No braver soldier over stepped to martial music. He was obedient to every call to duty in camp, on the march or in the most deadly conflict. While he realized the dangers incident to the life of a soldier and desired as much as any one to escape and return home to his wife and babe, no one met his obligations to his country more un-flinchingly than he. In 1865, on the I5th day of May, he, Wm. Hall and myself, surrendered to Capt. Boldwin, Battery B 1st Ohio Light Artillery at Bridgeport, Ala. and were paroled by C. Scripture, Prov. Marshal, and our worthy neighbor, Joe Laukaster, was a lieutenant in that battery and showed courtesies to us that were greatly remembered by Hall and Havner, both of whom have heard "taps" for the last time, and I am the only one left, but while memory asserts her throne Joe Laukaster will have a warm spot in my heart. Mr. Havner, after the surrender, returned to his wasted home that had suffered so much from the ravages of war and was again the good citizen that he was before he became a soldier. Some time in 1870 he moved with his family to Arkansas, where he became a Mason of note attaining the Royal Arch degree. He was also an Odd Fellow and was prominent in the work of both orders. He was a member of the M. E. Church, So. since I can first remember, and while he believed in falling from grace he never practiced it, while the writer don't believe in falling but does practice it. You have ???ives, but I have a strong hope I'll sometime, somewhere, in the happy beyond meet my old comrade, brother, kinsman and friend. I feel confident when his soul was challenged by St. Peter, the picket at the fort on high, that he had the countersign and that he is peacefully at rest with Jackson, Lee, and all the sainted hosts - on the beautiful camping ground on high, where there is no call to arms, but where the Blue and the Gray dwell peacefully together. There are but few of his old company on this side and they will ??? "Mart" at their Confederate ???ons, as he always attended to console and comfort the old boys - in what they always thought would be their last meeting. I am grieved to give him up for no one loved him more than his old comrade in the Army. J. C. BEENE. (WWW.YellCountyObits.org,His obituary was published in Apr 1910 in Arkansas. )
