Harvey, Leslie

Leslie Harvey, Author, Dies On Saturday, November 22, 2008, was the day that the life of Leslie Harvey, was sadly brought to an end and the Record will offer this article as a tribute to his memory. Leslie Harvey, 68, of Briggsville, was the local author of two published books as well as other publications.

You may recall reading excerpts from one of the books, titled, The True Story of James Jim W. Ince, The Last Man Hanged in Yell County, Arkansas, in recent editions of the Record. The community showed tremendous interest in the newspapers that carried these articles on Leslies book. Leslie sold many copies of his book, and was quite an attraction at the Plainview Frontier Day Celebration held in September. See Letter Written By Robert H. Williams On Hanging. Despite his failing health, Leslie was on hand to sign copies of his book and signed copies of the Yell County Record for those who were interested. Leslie spent many hours of his life doing research for this book. He took great pleasure in studying history and bringing it to life for those who chose to share in the journey with him. He had written several articles over the last 50 years which he had submitted to newspapers throughout Arkansas. He worked on this particular book since the early 60s, a total of 43 years.

One must be truly devoted to a project to put forth so much time and effort. Leslie drove many miles gathering information from several universities, several court houses, libraries, newspaper archives and talking to lots of old timers to bring this story to life. Harveys book depicts the trial of Ince in depth. The Danville Democrat currently the Yell County Record) and the Courier Democrat are two of the locally known newspapers that Mr. Harvey gathered his information from.

The Yell County Record received an interesting letter shortly after the issues ran with the excerpts from Leslies book. Letter From Robert Hays Williams About Ince Robert Hays Williams mailed in a letter stating that he was around 8 years old when the hanging of James Ince took place. His father, James T. Williams, happened upon the site of Inces execution, while on his way home from work. Following is a copy of that letter Dear Editor, I have been asked about the hanging of James Ince that occurred in 1905. That date was eight years before I was born, so I have no factual knowledge of the incident. The few facts that I am about to relate came from my father, James T. Williams, who was about 33 years old at that time. He lived in the Prairie Creek Community about where the Chamberlain Country Club is now located. He worked for Sharpe Bros. General Store and walked in and back each day along what is now Highway 27. He was not aware of the proceedings at the Yell County Courthouse of the preceding day. The road at that time crossed Petit Jean a short distance down creek from where it is now located. The road made a sharp right hand or easterly turn immediately after the crossing. The growth on the North side of the Creek blocked the view of anything on the bridge for one approaching from the East until arriving almost at the north edge. He was, therefore, almost on the bridge before he saw this body hanging by the neck with a rope that extended down from the super structure. He described it as the most ghastly and unnerving scene he had ever witnessed. He was not aware of the proceedings of the day before and the scene on the on the bridge unnerved him. He was not aware of the sentence that had been announced the day before and was then in the course of execution. He said that his first inclination was to turn and run. He did finally get his bearings together. He turned and walked back to the railroad track, about a quarter of a mile, crossed Petit Jean on the railroad bridge and walked into town. The Sheriff of Yell County at that time was Will Briggs whose children were Jennie Briggs Scisson, Wilma Briggs Bernard, Ola Briggs Higginbotham, Dodd Briggs, Bill Briggs (a daughter), and Mack Briggs. Robert Hays Williams James T. Williams and his wife, Lizzie, eventually opened their own store, J. T. Williams and Sons Variety Store, located where the former True Value, Western Auto, and the Yell County Record prior to 1950. Robert Hays Williams is a native and graduate of Danville, and also a long-time attorney and judge.

His letter sent in to us here at the Yell County Record, is greatly appreciated. Just weeks before Leslie drew his last breath, he published another book titled, Bluffton Mounds of Yell County. Only three publications were printed. The Yell County Library has a copy of this book. See complete Obituary this issue (WWW.YellCountyObits.org, Yell County Record, Danville, Arkansas; Obituary was published on Wednesday, December 3, 2008)

Haster, Edwin J.

Dr. Edwin J. Haster, 39 year old Dardanelle physician, died suddenly last Sunday afternoon while fishing on the Fourche River, five miles southeast of Plainview. Thomas Boyer and David Croom, who accompanied Dr. Haster on the trip, said the physician was standing on the bank when they heard him groan. They had gone out in a boat to bring in a line, the two men said, leaving Dr. Haster on the bank because he said he did not feel well enough to go with them. When he groaned, the men, who were about ten feet from the bank, hurried to him. He died soon after they reached him they said.

Croom went to Plainview to call the Cornwell Funeral Home of Dardanelle, who returned Dr. Haster's body to his home in Dardanelle. Dr. Haster was born in Kansas and attended the Kansas Medical and Surgical College at Kansas City. He interned at the Bethany hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio. He came to Dardanelle in 1925.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Clara O'Shaunessy Haster; his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Haster, of Laverne, Okla.; two sisters, also of Laverne; and one brother, Fred, of Newkirk, Okla.
