Dooley, Isabelle

Aged Woman Burns in Belleville Fire...Miss Isabelle Dooley, age around 75, burned to death in her home about one-half mile west of Belleville on Highway 10 last night around 10:00 p.m. according to information received from Sheriff Earl Ladd.

Will George, who had lived with Miss Dooley and her sister now deceased, for the past 15 or 20 years, said that a lamp apparently exploded and when he threw water on the flames, it spread the fire. He got Miss Dooley onto the front porch and went to the well for another bucket of water, telling her to get further away. On returning she was not to be found and the house collapsed in flames soon after. Her body was found in the remains of the house after the fire died down.

Rufus Horn and Gloyd Buckman and Mrs. Buckman, neighbors, reported hearing screams and seeing both Miss Dooley and Mr. George on the porch. By the time they had arrived at the scene, Miss Dooley had gone into the house and they were unable to rescue her.
