Rex Callan of Dardanelle has joined with a central Arkansas bluegrass band,"Tru-Blue." The group plays traditional bluegrass and bluegrass gospel music. The band is based at Little Rock but also has members in Jacksonville and Conway. This is Callan's fifth year of playing bluegrass music. He has performed statewide at shows and bluegrass festivals. He began playing bluegrass after being encouraged by a long-time friend, Tommy Hunt, whom Callan described as an "ex- cellent banjo player." They played with the Mount Nebo Picken' Palor Boys, for a while later with Foothill Review, then in 1983 Callan and Johnny Hamilton of Russellville formed Lost Mountain Bluegrass Band, which performed 75 shows over the last three years. The band disolved last fall when two of its members had to drop out and Callan was unable to find replacements. Callan was invited to join Tru-Blue as a fiddler soon after his former band disolved. He said he told other band members he felt honored that they would ask him to join their band. Callan played the violin as a youth but laid it up for about 30 years until Hunt encouraged him to start playing again. He has won seven trophies and several certificates of appreciation and has a scrapbook covering all of his achievements over the past four years. Known statewide by bluegrass fans, Callan is a member of the Arkansas Bluegrass Association and participates in their programs and activities. Callan said that Tru-Blue has four stage shows and 12 festivals at which to play between now and late August. He said he is looking forward to getting started. He plans to get the band to come to Dardanelle this spring and perform a free concert for people who are unable to go to the bluegrass festivals. "That is if all goes as planned, and I feel that it will, I know the band is ready to come here and perform," he said. Commits Suicide on Train Near Havana -- A passenger on the east bound train early Sunday morning, identified as Albert M. Campbell, age 36, cut his throat with a single-edge safety Razor blade just outside Havana and died before the train reached Havana. Campbell was on his way from San Pedro, Calif., to an unknown destination.
The conductor contacted Dr. Kent Grace from the Havana station, who met the train in Danville about 3 a.m. and removed the body. After removal of personal effects and identification papers by Deputy Sheriff Weatherall, the body was sent to the Cox Funeral Home in Paris. Examination of personal effects, including three billfolds, an accident insurance policy purchased with his ticket in San Pedro, February 27, 1947, two letters he had not mailed and a note containing two dollars and an address attached to his suitcase, indicated he was probably going to see his brother-in-law of Roling Fork, Miss., or his brother in Belzoni, Miss. Contents of the two letters indicated that Campbell's mind was deranged - he repeated over and over that the unions were spying on him, everybody was spying on him. Near 5 o'clock Monday morning, January 4th, the death angel softly entered the home of Mr. Carson Campbell, near Chickalah, with a summons for his dear wife. She had been in ill health but ten days yet bore her suffering with all patience, never once murmuring. Oh, how sad to part with loved ones whom we know can never come back again. We know she will be sadly missed, yet, dear husband and children, weep not as those who have no hope, for your dear wife and mother is at rest, basking in the sunlight of eternal bliss where there is no sickness, sorrow, pain or death and where all tears are wiped away. She leaves a dear husband, four daughters, four sons and a host of friends to mourn her loss. She was a true and faithful Christian, always speaking words of comfort to the unsaved, and sadly indeed will she be missed. E. M. C. First Lt. Doyle R. Campbell was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by direction of the President for his heroism while participating in aerial flight over the Republic of Viet Nam on February 27. 1964. On this date, Lt. Campbell was serving as aircraft commander of an armed UH-1B helicopter, when he voluntarily conducted low - level reconnaissance flights over a known Viet Cong company, identifying and attacking enemy positions that were impeding the progress of friendly ground forces. He responded immediately by leading a determined attack in which he personally silenced the weapon. "After neutralizing the Viet Cong positions, Lieutenant Campbell continued to conduct low-level surveillance flights over suspected escape routes, displaying great courage and daring, as heavy ground fire was being received from the area. "Lieutenant Campbell, a native of Dardanelle, Ark., entered the Army January 22, 1962, with a regular Army commission via the University of Arkansas ROTC program." Just at the hour of going to press we learn through a message received by Dr. L. E. Love that Dr. J. M. Campbell, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Dardanelle, died at 10 o'clock this morning in a hospital in St. Joseph, Mo., where he underwent a surgical operation about a month ago.
No details of funeral arrangements were given. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ REV. J. M. CAMPBELL Rev. J. M. Campbell, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Dardanelle, Ark., was born near Glascow, Scotland, in 1857. He came to America in 1880, locating in St. Joseph, Mo., where for several years he was engaged in the book and stationery business. He was married to Miss Annie C. Rusk in 1883. Mr. Campbell entered the ministry in 1901, his first charge being Platt City, Mo. He was Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Plattsburg, Mo., until 1922, when he accepted a call to the First Presbyterian Church of Dardanelle, Ark. He died at a hospital in St. Joseph, Mo., September 23rd, 1926, following an operation four weeks previously. Rev.
Campbell is survived by his wife and three sons: Milton A. Campbell, of Princeton, N. J.; Rev. Harvey R. Campbell, of Clarksville, Ia.; Frank M. Campbell of Excelsoir Springs, Mo. Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church of St. Joseph, Mo., at 2:00 o'clock on the afternoon of September 25th, 1926, conducted by the Pastor of the church, Dr. Rennic, and burial was in Allen Cemetery, at Gower, Mo. The local church has been wonderfully blessed in the personnel of its line of pastors, but none have had a stronger or more lasting hold on the affections of the congregation than Brother Campbell. He was a devout and deep Bible student, and loved to teach his people as a class is taught in a high-grade school. His hold on the young men with whom he came in contact has left a lasting impression on the life of this community. W. R. Hayden.
